Hi there. Stan The Annuity Man, America's annuity agent,
0:04
licensed in all 50 states and Puerto Rico, founder of CGO, Contractual Guarantees Only.
0:08
You own an annuity for what it will do, not what it might do.
0:11
Let's talk about annuities versus CDs. Let's do that comparison.
0:17
There is a product in the annuity world that is a CD version that protects the principal
0:24
and gives you a guaranteed interest rate. You probably haven't heard of it
0:28
because the built-in commissions are so, so low,
0:31
but that's the reason you need to hear about it. And we'll talk about that after this.
0:42
So, I'm assuming that most of you know what a CD is. You know, you go to the bank or you go
0:47
to the brokerage firm. I guess they have CDs as well. You give them money. They give you
0:52
a guaranteed interest rate for a specific term or period of time that you choose.
0:57
You can use it in all account types: Roth IRA, Traditional IRA, Non-IRA,
1:02
checking-account-type money. Everybody feels good about CDs. My grandfather and grandmother,
1:08
that's all they bought. My Mom and Dad, because I don't do business with
1:12
family, I don't want to go to a family reunion and talk business. I actually refer my family
1:18
to a good friend of mine in the business. I don't want to talk business with my family.
1:23
Anyway, my Mom and Dad, they just bought CDs, and I thought that was great. Cool.
1:28
In fact, my Mom, who's 87 this year, getting, I think, ready to be 88, she's always, "You know,
1:35
I heard you on the video talking about this MYGA. Do I need a MYGA?"
1:41
Maybe, but not for me. I guarantee you that, Mom. Not going to happen.
1:45
First of all, she's 88. There are not many companies that issue them,
1:47
but there are some that issue MYGAs up to age 90.
1:51
But everybody knows what a CD is. And I told my Mom, "Hey,
1:54
CDs are great for you. You understand them. You feel comfortable with them.
1:57
You know the guy at the bank you talk to, and you can go by and see him." That's fantastic.
2:03
But there is a version of a CD in the annuity space called a Multi-Year Guarantee Annuity.
2:10
Banks and brokerage firms issue CDs. Life insurance companies that issue annuities
2:15
also issue MYGAs—Multi-Year Guarantee Annuities. That's exactly what they are.
2:21
Terms are as short as one year and can typically go as far out as 10 or
2:25
more years. Ten years is normally where the carriers are pretty competitive. So,
2:30
one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, and ten years over here.
2:34
Again, MYGAs can be used in all the account types that CDs can be used in:
2:40
Roth IRA, Non-IRA, Traditional IRA.
2:44
But here's where they differ.
2:46
One difference is from a taxation standpoint. In a Non-IRA account, a checking-account-type
2:53
account, MYGAs, the interest grows and compounds tax-deferred. CDs don't.
3:01
That doesn't make them better, but they grow and compound tax-deferred.
3:04
People say, "Stan, where do you have your money? Where do you put your money?"
3:08
So, first of all, the stock market, I don't need the stock market. The Annuity Man company is
3:13
the best growth stock on the planet, okay? So I don't need anything more than that.
3:19
So, the safe money goes into MYGAs because I don't need the interest. I don't need the money. And
3:23
I don't need to pay taxes on that interest. So, it grows and compounds, and grows and compounds.
3:28
So, when I get to the end of the duration, let's just say I have a five-year duration, I
3:33
just roll it to another one and keep kicking the tax can down the... no,
3:37
that's wrong. The tax can down the road. Puck down the ice. Yeah, there you go.
3:43
Anyway, the point is: defer, defer, defer, defer.
3:46
They say, "Well, that's going to be a tax bomb for your children, your two daughters."
3:51
Okay, they'll get over it. Okay, they'll be okay.
3:55
But the point is, you can really play the tax game over here in a Non-IRA, Non-qualified,
4:02
checking-account-type account because that interest grows and compounds tax-deferred.
4:07
Any money you bring out is taxed at ordinary income levels, but you can have a strategy.
4:12
I have a lot of people who just lock and load like me. Roll it, roll it, roll it,
4:16
roll it. Rolling, rolling, rolling. I mean, you can just keep doing that.
4:21
So again, CDs: Roth IRA, IRA, Non-IRA.
4:25
MYGAs: Roth IRA, Non-IRA, Traditional IRA.
4:28
Same. You can use them in the same accounts.
4:33
Both have guaranteed interest rates for a term that you choose.
4:36
Both have no annual fees.
4:39
Both have no moving parts.
4:40
Both have no market attachments.
4:42
Hopefully... sometimes you see some funky CDs on the brokerage side,
4:47
but traditional CDs don't have any market attachments. MYGAs never do.
4:52
Both are very easy to understand.
4:54
Both are transparent.
4:58
Both commissions are built in.
5:00
Both commissions are low.
5:02
Both are great.
5:05
So, in a principal-protection world, the combination of CDs and MYGAs works.
5:11
Now, what I've seen in my decades out here as the top agent in the country: typically,
5:18
CD rates on the one- and two-year level are very competitive with MYGAs and sometimes beat them.
5:25
But once you get to the three-year duration and out, okay, once you're three years and beyond
5:30
on the duration curve, MYGAs historically have a better contractual yield than CDs.
5:37
Does that make them better? No.
5:39
But in combination, you can use them both together. You can ladder them. You can buy, like,
5:44
a three-year, five-year, seven-year, and ten-year and have money coming due at different durations.
5:50
You can choose MYGAs that allow you to take interest out or not.
5:55
There are MYGAs out there that allow you to take 10% out or not.
6:00
Both are RMD-friendly.
6:04
So, if MYGAs aren't on your radar screen, go to my site at theannuityman.com. There's a
6:08
live feed. Just put in your state, put in the duration, and you'll see them pop up.
6:13
We show everything. That doesn't mean we recommend everything, but we do show everything.
6:17
As a top agent in the country, I feel it's my responsibility to show the world what's
6:21
out there. Then, my recommendations will come to the forefront if you get serious
6:26
about wanting to purchase one and use us to get you across the finish line.
6:30
And I would encourage you to go to the site and download the books.
6:35
We don't have a CD owner's manual, but we have a MYGA owner's manual that you can take a look at,
6:39
in addition to the live feed and hundreds of videos I've done on the subject.
6:45
But CDs and MYGAs work together.
6:48
You know, the reason that MYGA rates typically are a little bit higher than CD rates is that life
6:56
insurance companies issue Multi-Year Guarantee Annuities, and they have many levers of profit.
7:03
They sell life insurance.
7:04
They sell lifetime income products.
7:06
They have a legacy bond portfolio.
7:08
There's something called mortality credits that they're playing off of as well.
7:12
And then they look at typical interest rates, whereas CDs are interest-rate focused.
7:18
Interest rates play a minor role in MYGA pricing.
7:21
So, you need to look at that. You need to consider that for
7:24
your safe money in chapter 2 of your life.
7:27
You know, annuities solve four things: principal protection,
7:30
income for life, legacy, and long-term care.
7:32
If that "P" of principal protection is a mainstay for you, MYGAs should be in the conversation.
7:38
There's really five places to put your money
7:41
in the world that are safe and give you a guaranteed interest rate:
7:45
CDs
7:46
Money markets Treasuries
7:48
AAA municipal bonds MYGAs
7:52
Those are your five.
7:54
Okay, we talked about two of them today that are eerily similar.
7:58
But the cool part about this is if you've got some non-qualified, checking-account-type money
8:02
that you want to get a good interest rate on, but not pay income tax on it,
8:08
and just let it defer and grow and compound, MYGAs, that's what I do,
8:12
and I love it, and my wife loves it. It's a good legacy strategy as well for the family.
8:18
Okay, one last thing.
8:19
Go to my site, theannuityman.com.
8:21
Email me at [email protected].
8:24
And one last thing, above my head, spinning clock.
8:27
Great video. One that you've always been waiting on: Why People Still Hate Annuities.
8:32
Why? I mean, they still do. They probably always
8:35
will unless the industry cleans it up and makes me czar forever.
8:39
And I would clean it up quickly because the interesting part about it is
8:43
everybody in this country already owns an annuity. It's called Social Security,
8:47
and they love it. It's lifetime income. It's guaranteed. They love it.
8:51
But somehow they hate annuities.
8:53
Boy, that's some bad marketing right there for the industry.
8:56
Really wish they would put me in charge of that.
8:58
Maybe they will in the future.
8:59
Until then, I'm going to do a video every single day until I change them.
