Hi there, Stan the Annuity Man,
0:02
America's annuity agent, licensed in all
0:03
50 states in Puerto Rico, founder of
0:05
[clears throat] CGO, contractual
0:06
guarantees only, which means you own an
0:08
annuity for what it will do, not what it
0:10
might do. Today's topic is a good one
0:13
and one that needs to be thoroughly
0:14
explained and not tiptoed around. It's
0:17
called the truth about annuity
0:18
commissions and fees.
0:21
Annuity commissions and fees. What
0:23
you're thinking in your mind is probably
0:25
not true. Hope that hope you are
0:27
correct. But there's so much
0:29
misconceptions and untruths out there
0:32
and agents tiptoeing around it. You know
0:35
me, I don't tiptoe around anything. I'm
0:36
66 two and a quarter. There's no
0:39
tiptoeing when you're 66 two and a
0:41
quarter. We're going to talk about it
0:42
after this.
0:50
So, the truth about annuity commissions
0:53
and fees. First of all, life insurance
0:55
companies issue annuities. There's many
0:58
different types of annuities, okay? But
0:59
life insurance companies issue
1:01
annuities. Let's talk about the
1:03
commissions first. All annuity
1:07
commissions are built in and hidden from
1:10
the consumer. I'm not saying that's good
1:12
and I'm not saying that's bad. I'm
1:14
saying that's reality. Okay? So, if you
1:17
put $100,000 in any type of annuity,
1:20
you're going to see $100,000 or whatever
1:22
the dollar amount is on your statement.
1:24
It's going to go to work for you. The
1:25
annuity commissions
1:28
are paid by the annuity company
1:30
generally from their from their main
1:31
account that pays heat, light, water
1:33
bill commissions, but it doesn't come
1:35
out of what you put in. That's one of
1:38
the biggest misconceptions of all time.
1:41
And I think a lot of that comes from
1:42
those old days. You I used to be with
1:44
Dean Witter Morgan Stanley Pay Weber UBS
1:46
where you had mutual funds that would
1:48
take commissions out. No, this doesn't
1:50
apply here. Annuity commissions
1:53
built in. So, it's a net transaction to
1:55
you. But let's go deeper on the
1:56
commission side. If the world was
1:59
perfect and run by Stan the annuity man,
2:01
if the annuity world was, you know, I
2:03
was annuities are forever, all annuity
2:06
commissions that are built in would be
2:07
the same and they would be low and they
2:10
would be compressed from where they are
2:13
now. The reason that you see products
2:16
like index annuities pushed, variable
2:19
annuities pushed, which I don't sell.
2:20
That's a security. I don't need to sell
2:21
that. I only do contractual guarantees
2:24
is because the commissions are high,
2:26
very high. There's a lot of agents out
2:28
there that just sell high commission
2:30
products. Doesn't I don't know how they
2:33
do that because that's not any anywhere
2:35
near being a fiduciary putting your best
2:37
interest ahead of theirs, but that's
2:39
what happens. Also, when commissions,
2:41
you can ask the agent, hey, what's the
2:44
commission on that? And if they say,
2:46
well, is this building?
2:48
No, ask them the number. They should be
2:49
able to give you the number. A long time
2:50
ago, about 10 years ago, there was some
2:52
legislation that that was here for a
2:55
little bit to where we had to actually
2:57
put in writing the commission. Boy,
2:58
those were great days. They went away.
3:01
That didn't happen anymore. I don't know
3:02
why. I don't know who got to the what
3:04
the lobby got to somebody, but that
3:07
doesn't happen. The other thing about
3:08
commissions you need to understand is
3:10
the more complex the product, the more
3:12
moving moving parts the product has, the
3:16
higher the commission. The longer the
3:18
surrender charge, the higher the
3:21
commission. Pretty basic stuff. The
3:23
simpler the product, the lower the
3:25
commission. If you can explain the
3:27
product to a nine-year-old, no offense
3:28
to nine-year-olds, the lower the
3:30
commission. I'll give you just a
3:31
horrific example of how I'm seeing the
3:34
commissions drive the recommendation for
3:36
some agents. We asked two questions.
3:38
What do you want the money to
3:39
contractually do? And when do you want
3:41
those contractual guarantees to start?
3:42
Pretty simple. And if you said, you know
3:44
what, Stan, we just we we need me and
3:47
the wife need lifetime income to start
3:49
now. We need to fill that gap now.
3:51
That's a single premium immediate
3:53
annuity.
3:55
Very simple product, very low commission
3:57
product. products been sold in this
3:59
country for over 200 years was the
4:01
original annuity in the Roman times. But
4:03
a lot of agents will say, "You don't
4:04
need a immediate annuity. Let me sell
4:06
you this index annuity and start it
4:08
immediately." That's fitting a square
4:10
peg into a round hole. I've only seen
4:12
that work 1% of the time.
4:16
One, maybe one. I'm being generous. But
4:18
if but if the agent's not showing all
4:21
products, then they're just a one-trick
4:23
pony. They're just a onetrick commission
4:26
pony.
4:28
So again, commissions.
4:31
The more complex the product, the higher
4:33
the commission. The more simple the
4:35
product, the lower the commission. The
4:36
longer the surrender charge, the higher
4:38
the commission. The shorter the
4:39
surrender charge, the lower the
4:40
commission. If you can explain it to a
4:42
nine-year-old, the lower the commission.
4:44
If you can't explain it to a
4:45
nine-year-old and the math problems have
4:46
letters in it, higher the commission.
4:48
Okay? The more complex, the higher the
4:51
commission. That's the reason everybody
4:53
if you walked into most um financial
4:55
advisors offices get you say you know
4:57
what [snorts] I got a sore throat and my
5:00
ankle hurts and they'll be like you need
5:02
an indexed annuity. You're like what I
5:05
mean highest commission product. I have
5:08
nothing against them. We sell them when
5:10
a writer is appropriate but we don't
5:12
care about the index annuity side. We're
5:14
focused on the contractual guaranteed
5:15
income writer. So that covers
5:17
commissions in a general sense. Let's
5:20
talk about fees. I love it when stupid
5:23
people, uninformed people with good
5:25
intent, say, "Shoot, I'd never buy an
5:27
annuity because the fees are just
5:29
incredibly high."
5:33
One of the dumbest things someone could
5:35
say, and hopefully they're holding a
5:37
drink in their hand with lots of like
5:38
tequilia in it because that's the only
5:42
excuse for that dumb of a statement.
5:44
Fees, not commissions, fees. Single
5:47
premium immediate annuities, deferred
5:49
income annuities, qualified longevity
5:50
annuity contracts, multi-year guarantee
5:53
annuities don't have fees. How about
5:56
that?
5:59
When you attach an income writer to an
6:01
indexed annuity, the income writer comes
6:03
with a fee. If you just bought the index
6:06
annuity as a standalone, I don't know
6:08
why you would do that, but if you did,
6:10
no fees. variable annuities fees, wrers
6:14
fees,
6:16
anything that's talking about
6:19
potential hypothetical non-g guaranteed
6:21
growth fees. Any writers attached fees,
6:25
writer means fee in 99% of all cases.
6:30
But if you wanted a lifetime income
6:31
stream, no fee product, straight
6:34
transfer of risk pension, DSP is QAX, no
6:37
fees, low commissions.
6:40
Simple. So get out of your head. Well,
6:42
nudities are just it's just laden.
6:45
They're laden stand laden with fees. No,
6:48
they're not. Which one are you talking
6:50
about, player? I love it when people
6:53
say, "Well, I hate all annuities." Which
6:55
one? Well, I hate all restaurants. Which
6:57
one? Well, I hate all trucks. Which one?
7:00
Well, I hate all shoes. What kind? So,
7:02
you hate all annuities, do you? You hate
7:05
social security?
7:07
No. You hate your pension?
7:10
No, don't talk in generalities. Well,
7:14
all annuity commissions are high. Wrong.
7:16
Well, all annuities have high fees.
7:18
Wrong.
7:19
Some do. Some commissions are high with
7:22
some product types. Some com some fees
7:24
are high with some product types, but a
7:26
lot of product types have no fees and
7:29
the commissions are built in and very
7:30
low. Remember, annuities as a general
7:35
category, the only product that solves
7:37
for lifetime income. It's a monopoly
7:39
that the annuity industry has.
7:42
I would encourage you to go to my site,
7:43
