Hi there, Stan the Annuity Man,
0:08
America's annuity agent, licensed in all
0:11
50 states. I think my cameraman just
0:13
fell. Pick him up. Pick him up before he
0:17
sues. [laughter]
0:19
Today's topic is why carrier ratings
0:23
don't tell the whole story. Stan only
0:26
tell I'm only going to buy A+ or better.
0:32
The reason that they don't tell the
0:34
whole story for us at the annuity man,
0:36
the gorilla in the annuity industry
0:38
room, licensed in all 50 states, is that
0:41
ratings are part of what we look at.
0:45
They are they but you have to understand
0:48
with rating services, most of them are
0:50
pay for play, meaning that the annuity
0:52
carriers have to pay the rating service
0:55
to rate them.
0:58
So there's a little bit of conflict of
1:00
interest, but not much. But you can't
1:03
say, "I'm only going to do this carrier
1:07
with this rating." Now, we do have a
1:10
rule at the annuity man that if you're
1:12
looking for lifetime income, our
1:13
recommendation currently at the time of
1:15
this taping is car is our depending on
1:18
what class you went to are carriers that
1:21
are only rated A+ or better. But it's
1:24
even bigger than that for us. Let me
1:26
tell you why. At the annuity man, we
1:28
have our own internal what we call
1:29
scorecard. Now, you're saying scorecard?
1:32
Listen, I play college basketball.
1:34
Everything's kind of sporty with me.
1:35
Okay? We always say take shots and all
1:37
that stuff because I play basketball.
1:40
But our scorecard is bigger than just
1:42
the rating. So, with our scorecard,
1:44
we're looking at how the uh back office
1:47
of that carrier interacts with our team
1:49
that's working for you. How fast do they
1:52
issue the policy? How easy is it to work
1:55
with them? How good is their website?
1:58
And then me and a bunch of other smart
2:01
people and they're smoking cigars and
2:02
I'm not look at their financials. We
2:06
literally go in and do that. And you
2:07
say, "Stan, you don't look that smart to
2:09
look at financials." Trust me, there's
2:11
some IQ behind this baseball cap. You
2:14
know, I used to work at Morgan Stanley,
2:15
Dean Witter, Payne Weber, and UBS, Union
2:18
Bank of Switzerland, so I kind of know
2:21
what I'm looking at. And I have even
2:23
smarter people around me that can really
2:25
read the financials and look at the
2:26
numbers that have been listed by the
2:29
carriers in addition to the in addition
2:31
to the carrier rating. Okay? So I just
2:36
want you to put that in the back of your
2:37
head. You can't just be myopically
2:40
looking at the carrier rating. And and
2:42
typically on our site we'll list there's
2:44
a there's a good company called AM Best,
2:46
but there's other companies that do it.
2:47
Sanderpores, Moody's, Fitch that rate
2:50
carriers for the claims paying ability
2:52
and the strength. But we do have some,
2:54
you know, we do have some parameters
2:56
that we say, okay, A+ or better if you
2:57
want lifetime income because they have
2:59
to pay you as long as you are
3:01
breathing, right? Okay. But there might
3:05
be on our site because annuities are
3:06
commodity products. We list all
3:08
carriers. You might say, you know what,
3:10
I like that XYZ company or whatever the
3:13
company's called. Okay. I love Sink and
3:16
Sands of Texas Insurance Company. That's
3:18
the one I want. Okay, great. We say,
3:21
"Okay, but right now on our scorecard,
3:23
TAM, the annuity man, TAM, the annuity
3:27
man." On the TAM scorecard, we're not
3:30
recommending them right now. Now, we're
3:32
not going to throw a carrier under the
3:33
bus. We're not going to say anything
3:34
negative about them. They're doing the
3:36
best they can. But if they're not
3:38
meeting our parameters from the
3:40
administrative side, proconsumer side,
3:42
proc customer side, we will put them on
3:46
a watch list, not recommend them. And
3:48
then I have a person in my office that
3:50
is the sweetest little thing. She's
3:52
fantastic until this happens. And she
3:55
calls the carrier and we'll say, "Call
3:57
the carrier and tell them we need them
3:59
to do this or else we will not recommend
4:01
them." and she does that and typically
4:04
they turn things around for us because
4:06
we are the annuity man, the gorilla in
4:09
the fixed fixed annuity world. So that's
4:12
how it works. That's the reason that
4:13
carrier ratings don't tell the whole
4:15
story.
4:17
All right. Now, we'll be very upfront
4:20
with you on on who's on that watch list,
4:23
who we're not recommending at the time.
4:25
You know, we don't say anything negative
4:27
about the company because we want them
4:28
to be a better company. If we see
4:30
something financially, we're going to
4:31
ask a question. If we if they
4:33
continually are late on some things or
4:35
don't return our calls on your behalf,
4:38
we're going to score them. So, every
4:40
week we have a meeting with all the
4:42
people at the annuity man and and we
4:44
talk about the carriers and then we
4:46
score them. So that I'm just giving you
4:49
a heads up when you go to my site at the
4:50
annuity man and you're running quotes
4:51
and you're looking at the MIGA feed you
4:54
might see something that you really like
4:55
re really like and then you schedule a
4:57
call with our team and they might go at
4:59
this point in time the TAM scorecard is
5:02
not up to our standards and we're not
5:04
recommending them. We're okay being
5:07
wrong about that but this is your money.
5:10
Okay, that's the reason that you know I
5:11
own the company with my wife owned it
5:13
for a long time but we take this
5:15
serious. We both came from
5:18
low low low middle class America and
5:20
nothing wrong with that. Okay. But what
5:23
that means is you always say there's two
5:26
types of advisors. Advisors that grew up
5:27
rich and advisers that grew up not rich.
5:30
Advisors that grew up not rich. Which
5:32
means that every dollar means a lot to
5:35
us that you're looking to invest or
5:37
looking to place with annuity company.
5:38
And that's the reason the annuity man
5:40
scorecard is in place. Hope that helps.
5:45
If it doesn't, call me and I'll try to
5:47
help even more. Contact us at
5:49
theanuityman.com and go there, run
5:52
quotes, and you can schedule a call with
5:54

5:56
help. I'm Stan the Annuity Man. See you
5:58
next time.
