077 Dan Prescher: No U-Hauls Behind Hearses

About Fun With Annuities Episode #77

I really enjoyed having co-host Dan Prescher on the Fun With Annuities podcast #77 because his organization falls in line with my saying that “There’s no U-Hauls behind hearses!” In other words, you can’t take it with you, so enjoy life while you can. Live life every day like you are dying tomorrow.

Dan works with International Living Magazine and helps people travel and live overseas, and assists people when they decide to live in another country for long periods. Some even choose to make that move permanently.

Annuities provide the contractual guarantees that assist people in living the life they have always dreamed of, so introducing Dan and his organization seemed like an obvious no-brainer. International Living has been helping and educating people for over 40 years by providing overseas retirement calculators, informative conferences, and networking opportunities with Americans currently living abroad.

Dan offered up this, "If you could move tomorrow to a place where it costs you half as much to live, you’ve doubled the value of your resources.”

During this incredibly interesting podcast, Dan and I discussed the best value places overseas and his insight into finding the top places to visit and possibly live full time. We discussed budgeting, money, taxes, health care, and what it’s like to live in another place other than America. How easy is it? Will you be accepted? Will you be lonely? How about assisted living? We covered all of those questions and more during our conversation.

Dan encouraged the listeners and viewers to “test the waters” before diving in and to think about trying something different. Why wouldn’t you? You can always come back to the states if it doesn’t work out. Dan pointed out that living abroad makes you pay attention to what’s important in your life.

Open your mind to the possibilities of living abroad….on your terms. This episode is a fantastic primer for you to start considering if this makes sense for you. Life is short and fleeting. Take the first shot by listening to this one-of-a-kind podcast. Enjoy!

Brief Bio on Co-host Dan Prescher:

Dan Prescher is the guy to talk to if you want to live an interesting life in retirement and we were lucky enough to have him join us as this week's Celebrity co-host. Dan Prescher and his wife Suzan Haskins were running a lucrative marketing business in Omaha, Nebraska, when, in 2001, they escaped the corporate grind and Midwestern winters and moved to Quito, Ecuador, as editors for InternationalLiving.com. Since then he has traveled the world with her, researching and writing about living, working, and retiring abroad. They’ve lived and worked in seven locations throughout Mexico, Panama, Nicaragua, and Ecuador and have explored dozens more expat havens around the world, including locations in Brazil, Argentina, Colombia, Belize, Costa Rica, Honduras, Ireland, France, and Thailand. He and Suzan are currently permanent residents of Mexico.

Dan serves as master of ceremonies for International Living’s seminars, conferences, and other events held around the world. He and Suzan have produced in-depth webinars on living and working abroad and several of the most popular expat destinations. They are the authors of two books: Live Richer, Spends Less; and The International Living Guide to Retiring Overseas on a Budget. For 32 years, InternationalLiving.com has been the leading authority on overseas retirement and lifestyle options. You can also follow the publication on Twitter just to get an idea of the possibilities that are out there.

In this episode, The Annuity Man and Dan Prescher discuss:

  • Planning for travelling internationally
  • Travelling internationally as a lifestyle change
  • Minimalism and happiness
  • Joining communities abroad

Key Takeaways:

  • Research is the key, start by ruthlessly profiling yourself and ask yourself what you can do without and what you can’t do without.
  • If you plan to live abroad, you gotta do it from the heart, it has to be a lifestyle choice. Otherwise you’d just be an economic refugee.
  • Once you keep things compact and minimal, you can start focusing on what really matters. Happiness is in the people you know and the things you do, not in what you have.
  • Community comes with the package, it cannot be avoided.
